Simple Sensory Experiences That Help Young Children Learn

From the moment your baby enters the world, they begin learning through their senses. This is called sensory discovery

And it's everyday, simple experiences that form the foundations for future learning, development and curiosity.

What Is Sensory Discovery?

Sensory discovery simply means exploring the world through the senses.

Young children naturally use all five senses to learn:

Touch – feeling textures, shapes and materials
Sight – observing colours, movement and patterns
Sound – listening to voices, music and everyday noises
Smell – recognising familiar and comforting scents
Taste – exploring different flavours and foods

It's through everyday experiences children begin to understand how things work and how it relates to the world around them.

Why Sensory Discovery Is So Important

In the early years, the brain is developing incredibly quickly. Sensory experiences help create and strengthen the neural pathways that support growth, learning and development.

Sensory play and exploration help children to develop:

Fine motor skills
Handling different materials helps strengthen the small muscles in hands and fingers.

Language development
Talking about what children see, feel and hear expands vocabulary and communication.

Curiosity and exploration
Sensory activities naturally encourage children to investigate and ask questions.

Problem solving
Experimenting with textures, materials and objects helps children begin to understand cause and effect.

Emotional regulation
Many sensory experiences can feel calming and comforting for young children.

Sensory Discovery Happens in Everyday Moments

One of the most wonderful things about sensory discovery is that it doesn’t require complicated activities or elaborate setups.

In fact, many sensory experiences happen naturally throughout the day without you even realising.

It's simple moments like cuddling with your baby that provide vast opportunities for learning. Not only will you and your baby be building a bond, your baby will also be experiences the different textures of your clothes, your different facial expressions, the familiar smells, and the different sounds and tones of your voice. Consistent exposure to these experiences form millions of connections in the brain that will last a lifetime.

Other everyday experiences that are helping your baby learn can be so basic but have significant impact.

  • Being in the bath with a sponge and bubbles, provides a comforting surrounding whist enabling the development of skills like cause and effect, tactile exploration and sensory awareness

  • Discovering through play how different materials feel and respond - a ball is soft and will roll however a wooden spoon is hard and doesn't bounce when dropped

  • Listening to sounds including music and different voices, tones and volumes supports auditory and language development and forms the foundations for emotional awareness

  • Exploring different food textures, tastes and smells develops the senses while gently encouraging curiosity and confidence around food
  • Getting outside and visiting natural environments such as gardens, parks or beaches introduces children to new sights, sounds, textures and smells

Encouraging Sensory Exploration at Home

You don’t need special equipment to encourage sensory discovery.

Some easy ways to support sensory exploration include:

  • Providing toys with different textures and materials

  • Allowing time for outdoor exploration

  • Reading high contrast books and ones with bright colours and tactile elements

  • Playing with water, sand or natural materials

  • Talking to your baby and listening to music and different sounds

The most important part is simply allowing children the time and space to explore.

Learning Through Curiosity

You can see that sensory discovery doesn’t need complicated activities or carefully planned setups. In fact, some of the most meaningful learning happens during the simplest everyday moments — splashing in the bath, turning the pages of a book, singing a song together, or listening to a favourite story.

By giving children the time and freedom to safely explore through their senses, we help nurture natural curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
